Pakistan Trekking Resources: Maps, Books, Visa & Permits

Everything you need to plan a Karakoram trek beyond your kit: the best books and maps, the visa and permit facts, the right season, and practical travel tips from a local team. Use it with our Pakistan trekking gear list and our trekking medicine & altitude guide.

Plan a Karakoram Trek with Confidence

Pakistan's Karakoram holds some of the greatest treks on earth — and a little planning goes a long way. Reading, maps and a clear picture of visas, permits, season and logistics turn a daunting trip into an achievable one. The resources below are the ones we point our own clients to.

Visas & Permits: Get the Paperwork Right

Tourist visas cover the popular valleys, but restricted-zone treks — K2 Base Camp, the Gondogoro La, Hispar and others — need a Trekking & Mountaineering visa plus permits and, in places, a No-Objection Certificate. We provide an invitation letter and arrange the permits, so you only handle your own visa application.

Maps, Books & Trip Resources

Below are the books, maps, apps and practical facts we recommend for trekking in Pakistan — from what to read before you go to how to get to the trailhead. Anything you cannot find, just ask us; planning your trip is part of what we do.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a special visa to trek?

For restricted-zone treks such as K2 Base Camp and the Gondogoro La you need a Trekking & Mountaineering visa, which is different from a standard tourist visa. We provide an invitation letter and supporting documents to help your application; you apply through Pakistan's official online visa portal.

When is the best time to trek?

The main Karakoram trekking season runs roughly June to September, with July and August the warmest and most reliable. Lower-altitude valley, blossom (March–May) and autumn (mid-September) tours have wider windows. Mountain weather changes fast in any month.

How do I get to Skardu?

Fly Islamabad–Skardu (about 50 minutes, weather-dependent) or drive the scenic Karakoram Highway over one to two days. We arrange airport pickups, transfers and the 4x4 jeeps for the final road to the trailhead, and build in buffer days for flight delays.

Is there phone signal on the trek?

There is mobile signal and wifi in the towns, but none once you are on trek — you are off-grid for the trekking days. We carry a satellite phone for safety and logistics, and GPS tracking lets family follow your progress.

Do I need a guide and permits?

Yes — restricted-zone treks require permits and a registered guide, both of which we provide. National-park fees, trekking permits and any NOC are arranged by us and included in your trip price where applicable.

    What currency should I bring?

Bring your spending money as cash in USD, EUR or GBP — there are limited ATMs in the towns and none on trek. Keep some small cash for the bazaar, drinks and handicrafts, and budget a fair tip for the crew.
