The Rush Lake Trek is one of Pakistan’s most rewarding high-altitude day treks — a challenging ascent from Nagar Valley to Rush Lake (4,694m), the world’s highest accessible lake, with staggering panoramic views of Rakaposhi (7,788m), the Hispar Glacier and the surrounding Karakoram peaks that few trekkers ever witness.
Rush Lake — The World’s Highest Accessible Lake
Rush Lake sits at 4,694m in the Nagar Valley above the Karakoram Highway, making it one of the highest accessible lakes on Earth. The lake itself is a brilliant turquoise jewel set in a high glacial cirque — but the true reward of reaching it is the panoramic view of Rakaposhi from directly alongside the mountain. At this elevation and proximity, Rakaposhi fills the entire horizon — an overwhelming perspective of one of the world’s most beautiful peaks.
The Route
Begin in Nagar Village — a beautiful traditional settlement just off the Karakoram Highway with views of Rakaposhi across the valley. The trail climbs steeply through juniper scrub, then open hillside, gaining over 2,000m of elevation to the lake. The ascent is demanding but non-technical — no specialist equipment required, just strong legs and good altitude acclimatisation from the days in Hunza.
