It is more accessible to first-time high-altitude trekkers, allows more time at the key viewpoints, and has the most well-established camping infrastructure.

Islamabad to Skardu by flight, then 4×4 to Askole. The trek follows the Braldu River gorge to Jhola, then the rose-filled meadows of Paiju, onto the glacier moraine at Urdukas, across the ice to Goro II and the summit at Concordia (4,500m) — the Throne Room of the Mountain Gods, surrounded by K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum I and II. A full day’s walk reaches K2 Base Camp (5,150m).

The highest point is 5,150 m, so altitude counts here. The itinerary is built around acclimatising and your guide sets a pace that gets you there comfortably.
You’re ready ifyou hike regularly, are happy with long days, and have spent some time above 3,000 m.
Give yourself a little longer ifyour longest recent day was under six hours. Give it a few months of hill walking with a pack and you will be ready.

How much does the K2 Base Camp Trek cost?
Our 2026 fixed departures run at $2,300 per person, all-inclusive — permits and NOC, camping and meals on the trek, local Balti guides and porters, and ground transport from Skardu. No hidden extras bolted on at the trailhead.
How long is the trek, and what does the schedule look like?
Twenty-one days, twenty nights start to finish. That covers travel from Islamabad to Skardu, the 4x4 jeep up the Braldu valley to Askole, the trek in along the Baltoro Glacier to Concordia and K2 Base Camp, the return on the same route, and buffer days for weather.
How hard is the K2 Base Camp Trek? Do I need climbing skills?
It is a hard trek, but not a technical climb — no ropework or mountaineering skills are needed on the classic route. What it asks for is endurance: long days on glacier moraine, altitude up to 5,150m, cold camps, and remote ground where there are no roads. Come with solid cardio fitness and ideally some prior multi-day trekking, and you will be ready for it.
When is the best time to do the trek?
The season runs June 1 to September 15. July and August give the most settled weather and the warmest camps on the glacier. Early June and September are quieter but colder.
How high do you go?
The high point is K2 Base Camp at roughly 5,150m, reached by way of Concordia at around 4,600m — the meeting point of the Baltoro glaciers, ringed by K2, Broad Peak and the Gasherbrums.
Do I need a special permit or visa?
Yes. Trekking here needs a Pakistan Trekking & Mountaineering visa, which is different from a standard tourist visa, plus trekking permits and an NOC for the Central Karakoram National Park. We arrange the permits and guide you through the visa paperwork before you travel.
What about safety and emergencies on the glacier?
Safety is where we never cut corners. Every Karakoram Venture expedition carries a satellite phone for camp communication, and in a real emergency helicopter rescue can be arranged through our regional contacts. Be clear on how that works out here: the cost of a heli evacuation is borne by the client and settled through their insurance, not bundled into the trek price. That is exactly why the insurance below matters.
What insurance do I need for the K2 Base Camp Trek?
We strongly require every trekker to join with mountaineering or adventure travel insurance that includes high-altitude helicopter evacuation cover — valid to at least 5,200m. On the Baltoro there is no road out, so heli-evacuation is the emergency option, and the cost falls to you and your insurer. Sort this before you travel, not after; we are happy to tell you what a suitable policy needs to cover.
