The Most Spectacular Mountain Pass Crossing in Pakistan
The Gondogoro La Pass at 5,585 metres is the defining feature of what many consider the finest trek in the world. It is the only location on Earth from which a trekker can simultaneously see four 8,000-metre peaks — K2 (8,611m), Broad Peak (8,051m), Gasherbrum I (8,080m), and Gasherbrum II (8,035m) — from a single mountain pass. The moment you reach the top and turn south to face that panorama is described by almost every trekker who has crossed it as the most powerful visual experience of their life.
Our K2 Base Camp and Gondogoro La Trek is the most complete way to experience the pass — entering the Karakoram via the Baltoro Glacier from Askole and exiting over the Gondogoro La into the Hushe Valley, creating a circular route with no backtracking.
Where Is the Gondogoro La?
The Gondogoro La sits on the ridge separating the Baltoro Glacier to the north from the Hushe Valley to the south. It is accessed from the Baltoro side via Ali Camp (4,800m), which serves as the high camp for the crossing. The descent leads to Khuspang Camp (4,450m) and then south through the Gondogoro Valley toward the village of Hushe.
The Technical Challenge
The Gondogoro La is not a walk. The ascent from Ali Camp involves 60 to 70 degree ice and snow slopes of approximately 400 vertical metres using fixed ropes, crampons, and ice axes. Most operators provide crampon and rope training at Ali Camp the day before the crossing. The crossing begins with a 2 AM alpine start to reach the pass before afternoon weather deteriorates. The descent on the far side is steep and requires careful crampon technique.
Prior high-altitude experience above 4,500m is strongly recommended before attempting this crossing. Trekkers with no previous crampon experience must attend the training session at Ali Camp without exception.
Best Season
The Gondogoro La is typically open from late June to early September. The ideal crossing window is July and August, when snow conditions on the pass are most stable and fixed ropes are in position. Early season crossings (June) risk deep snow; late season (September) risk icy, unstable conditions. Weather can close the pass with short notice — our itineraries always include a buffer day.
The Grand Slam: Crossing in Both Directions
The most ambitious version of this crossing is the Great Karakoram Traverse — which crosses the Gondogoro La from south to north (Hushe to Baltoro), traverses the full Baltoro Glacier to K2 Base Camp, then continues west onto the Biafo Glacier, across Snow Lake, and over the Hispar La into Hunza Valley. This 32-day expedition is among the most challenging treks in the world.
Rescue and Safety
All our Gondogoro La crossings include a dedicated rescue team from the Hushe Valley who meet the group at Ali Camp and assist with the technical sections. We carry satellite phones for emergency communication throughout the expedition. Helicopter evacuation insurance is mandatory for all trekkers on this route.
