The Ultimate Guide to Pakistan’s Greatest Trek
The K2 Base Camp Trek is the most iconic high-altitude adventure in Pakistan — a journey along the legendary Baltoro Glacier to the foot of K2 (8,611m), the world’s second-highest and most technically demanding mountain. Unlike Everest Base Camp, K2 remains genuinely remote, demanding, and untouched by commercial tourism. You will share the trail with mountaineers, ibex, and silence.
At Karakoram Venture, we have guided hundreds of trekkers from Askole to K2 Base Camp and back. This guide covers everything you need to plan your 2026 expedition.
Route Overview
The classic K2 Base Camp Trek follows the Baltoro Glacier from Askole (3,000m) through camps at Jhola, Paiju, Urdukas, and Goro II before reaching Concordia (4,500m) — the meeting point of four glaciers and the viewpoint of K2, Broad Peak, and the Gasherbrums. From Concordia, a full-day return walk leads to K2 Base Camp (5,150m).
For those seeking a more challenging experience, the K2 Base Camp and Gondogoro La Trek creates a spectacular circular route, exiting over the Gondogoro La Pass (5,585m) into the Hushe Valley rather than retracing the same glacier.
Best Season
The optimal trekking window is June to September. July is the peak month — glaciers are most stable, weather is most consistent, and you may witness active mountaineering expeditions on K2’s upper flanks. Avoid May (too much snow) and October (rapidly deteriorating conditions).
Difficulty Level
This is a Grade 4 — Strenuous trek. Daily walking distances range from 15 to 22km on moraine, rocky terrain, and glacier. Nights at Concordia drop below -10°C. Prior high-altitude experience above 3,500m is strongly recommended. You do not need technical climbing skills, but strong fitness and mental endurance are essential.
How Long Does It Take?
A well-planned K2 Base Camp Trek takes 18 to 21 days from Islamabad to Islamabad. Itineraries shorter than 16 days compromise on acclimatisation, increasing altitude sickness risk significantly. Our all-inclusive 21-day departure builds in three acclimatisation days and one buffer day for weather.
Permits Required
All trekkers in the Baltoro Glacier restricted zone require official permits from Pakistan’s Ministry of Tourism and the Gilgit-Baltistan Council. These are arranged exclusively through a licensed tour operator. At Karakoram Venture, all permits are included in our package price. You pay once — permits, porters, guides, camping, and meals are all covered.
What Does It Cost?
A fully all-inclusive K2 Base Camp Trek with a reputable operator costs between USD 2,300 and USD 3,500 per person for group departures. Private or solo expeditions cost significantly more. Our fixed group departures start from USD 2,600 per person, including domestic flights, all permits, guides, porters, meals, and camping equipment.
Getting There
Fly into Islamabad International Airport (ISB). From Islamabad, take a domestic flight to Skardu (1 hour 10 minutes) — one of the most spectacular commercial flights in the world, passing alongside Nanga Parbat. From Skardu, a 4×4 jeep drive through the Shigar Valley reaches Askole, where the trek begins on foot.
