The Best Festivals and Events to Experience in Northern Pakistan
Northern Pakistan is not only one of the world’s great trekking destinations — it is also a region of extraordinarily rich cultural traditions, seasonal celebrations, and community festivals that offer visitors a window into some of the most ancient and welcoming cultures in the world.
Here are the key events and seasonal festivals that make northern Pakistan come alive throughout the year.
Jashn-e-Baharan — Spring Blossom Festival (March–April)
Every spring, the valleys of Hunza and Skardu celebrate the arrival of the cherry, apricot, and almond blossoms with local festivals, music, and cultural performances. The Jashn-e-Baharan (Festival of Spring) in Karimabad draws visitors from across Pakistan and beyond. Folk musicians perform traditional Burusho and Balti music in the orchards, and local families open their homes for traditional meals. Our Hunza Cherry Blossom Tour and Skardu Cherry Blossom Tour are timed to coincide with the peak blossom period.
Polo Festival — Gilgit and Chitral (October/November)
The high-altitude polo played in Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral is unlike any polo you have ever seen — played at 3,000m on a mountain meadow, with hundreds of spectators, live drumming, and a ferocity that reflects the game’s ancient origins. The Shandur Polo Festival at the world’s highest polo ground (3,700m) on the Shandur Pass is the most famous, drawing teams from Gilgit and Chitral. The Shahi Eid Polo Festival in Gilgit’s Aga Khan Polo Ground is another spectacular event. If you are visiting in late summer or autumn, arranging your departure around one of these festivals adds a unique cultural layer to your trip.
Skardu Ultra Marathon (August)
The Skardu Ultra Marathon is one of Pakistan’s most dramatic sporting events — an ultramarathon run through the Baltistan landscape, with a backdrop of Karakoram peaks. Runners from Pakistan and internationally participate in a circuit around the Skardu basin. Even as a spectator, witnessing athletes run through this extraordinary landscape is an experience. Our Baltistan Cultural Tour can be timed around the marathon dates.
Harvest Season — Autumn in Baltistan (October)
October is one of the most beautiful and culturally rich times to visit Skardu. The poplar and apricot trees turn gold and red, and the valleys are alive with the harvest season. Farmers collect the last of the summer’s apricots — the cornerstone of the Balti diet — and the air carries the faint sweetness of drying fruit. Our Skardu Autumn Tour is specifically designed to capture this magical season.
Navroz — Ismaili New Year (March 21)
Navroz, the Persian New Year celebrated on the spring equinox, is a major cultural event in Hunza, Gilgit, and the Ismaili communities of northern Pakistan. Streets are decorated, traditional foods are prepared, and communities gather for prayers, music, and celebration. Visiting Hunza or Karimabad around March 21st provides a rare and genuine insight into the Burusho culture of the valley.
