Batura Glacier Trek — Eight Days Beside One of the Longest Glaciers Outside the Poles

The Batura Glacier Trek is a 8 days guided trip in Gilgit-Baltistan, northern Pakistan, topping out at 3,500 m. It is graded Moderate to demanding — two roped glacier crossings and loose moraine — 6 days on foot including a rest day at Yashpirt. 3 fixed departures are open from $1,280 per person, all-inclusive from Islamabad.

The Batura glacier runs 57 km from the Batura Muztagh to the Karakoram Highway, where its grey snout stops just short of the road at Passu. One of the longest glaciers outside the polar regions, and almost nobody walks beside it. This trek climbs the lateral moraine from Passu and links the Wakhi summer pastures on its northern flank: Yunzbin, Yashpirt and Guchesham, where herders keep yaks under the Batura wall and Batura Sar (7,795 m). There are no high passes. There are two glacier crossings on loose, broken ice, which is why we rope up and never run it without a local guide. Eight days door to door from Hunza, with a rest day at Yashpirt. Local hands, real safety, fair price.

What to expect

The highest point is 3,500 m. Most people feel nothing worse than short breath up there, and the pace is set to keep it that way.

You’re ready ifyou walk or hike now and then and can manage a few hours uphill with a day pack.
Give yourself a little longer ifit has been a while since a long walk. A few hill walks beforehand and you will enjoy it far more.
This might not be your trip ifyou would rather not sleep in a tent, or you want a glacier crossing or a high pass. Tell us and we will match you to the right one.

One thing we do insist on: travel insurance that covers helicopter evacuation.

Travel Plan

Itinerary — Batura Glacier Trek

Eight days from Karimabad: a night in Passu, the moraine to Yunzbin, the glacier crossing to Yashpirt, a rest day under the Batura wall, the high pastures of Guchesham, and back down to Passu.
8 days

Drive up the Karakoram Highway past Attabad Lake to Passu at about 2,540 m. Afternoon walk to the Batura glacier snout above the highway, gear check and briefing for the crossings. Night in Passu.

A gentle climb along the lateral moraine through juniper, wild rose and birch to the summer pasture of Yunzbin, where Wakhi herders keep yaks. Camp.

The first crossing: roped up, your guide picks the line over the rubble-covered Batura glacier, slow and broken going, then out onto the meadow at Yashpirt with shepherd huts and the Batura icefall in front of you. Camp.

A day to rest the legs and look: short walks above camp for views of the Batura wall, time with the herders, and an easy day before the high pastures.

Ridgelines, glacier-fed streams and grazing yaks via Kukhil to Guchesham, the highest summer settlement on the route at about 3,500 m, with the full sweep of the Batura massif. Camp.

Down the same pastures, usually faster, with the light on the Batura wall behind you. Camp at Yashpirt.

The second crossing, back over the Batura glacier and down the moraine to Passu village. A long day; hot showers and a bed at the end. Night in Passu.

A slow morning in Passu, then the drive back down the Karakoram Highway to Karimabad by midday.

Why Karakoram Venture

Because the people who take you up this mountain are from it. Our guides grew up in these valleys, and they are our own team — not a booking desk handing you to whoever is cheapest that week. Every one of them is certified by the Alpine Club of Pakistan, holds Wilderness First Aid, and has between five and twenty years on high-altitude ground.

Because the safety is real, and we will name it rather than imply it. A satellite phone travels in every camp, we hold established helicopter-rescue contacts for this region, and we tell you exactly which travel insurance to carry. Budget operators cut precisely these things, because you cannot see them on a web page.

Because the price is honest. Local infrastructure is why $1,280 per person covers the trip from Islamabad rather than a stripped-down base rate. Exactly what it includes — and the handful of things it does not — is set out above.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the Batura glacier?

About 57 km, flowing west to east from the Batura Muztagh to the Karakoram Highway near Passu. It is one of the longest glaciers outside the polar regions.

How high does the trek go?

The highest camp, at Guchesham, is usually given as about 3,400 to 3,500 m. Published altitudes for the camps on this route vary by up to a few hundred metres between sources, so treat all of them as approximate. Optional walks from the pastures go higher for the views.

Is it dangerous?

It is not technical, but there are two glacier crossings on rubble-covered, crevassed ice, plus loose moraine. We rope up for the crossings, choose the line with a local guide who knows the glacier that season, carry a satellite phone and turn back if conditions are wrong.

What will I see?

The Batura wall and Batura Sar (7,795 m), the Passu peaks, and the long grey river of the glacier itself. The pastures at Yunzbin, Yashpirt and Guchesham are used by Wakhi herders in summer, with yaks, stone huts and wild rose and juniper lower down.

How does this compare with Patundas?

Patundas is shorter and higher: one glacier crossing, a steep climb to about 4,100 m and six days. Batura is longer and lower: two crossings, more days beside the ice and a highest camp around 3,500 m. Both start from the Passu area.

When is the season?

June to September, when the pastures are grazed and the crossings are best known. Early June can still hold snow on the upper moraine.
