Deosai Brown Bear Watching Safari — Four Days Camped With the Last Bears

The Deosai Brown Bear Watching Safari is a 4 days guided trip in Gilgit-Baltistan, northern Pakistan, topping out at 4,250 m. It is graded Easy walking — cold camps at about 4,000 m — short walks from camp. 4 fixed departures are open from $650 per person, all-inclusive from Islamabad.

Deosai was made a national park in 1993 for one reason: to save the Himalayan brown bear. There were 19 left then. By 2022 there were about 78, living across a plateau that averages 4,114 m and is buried in snow for most of the year. A day trip from Skardu shows you Deosai at noon, which is when bears are asleep in the folds of the land. This safari camps on the plateau so you are out at first light and in the last hour of the day, when they move. We will be straight with you: bears are shy, sightings are never guaranteed, and that is how it should be. What we promise is the right hours, the right ground, quiet behaviour and proper kit at 4,000 m. Local hands, real safety, fair price.

Deosai Bear Safari Price

From $650 per person in a group of four to six, Skardu to Skardu. That covers the 4x4 and driver for four days, a local guide who knows the plateau, a cook, full camping equipment, all meals on the plateau, Deosai National Park fees and a satellite phone with the crew. Hotels in Skardu before and after are not included. Bring binoculars: they matter more than any camera lens here.

Fixed Departures

Fixed departures are scheduled dates you join as part of a group, rather than arranging your own trip. 4 dates are currently open, each capped at 6 people. Every date is the same price, $650 per person. A $100 deposit reserves a place. The availability column shows how many places are left on each date.

Can you do this trek?

Yes — if you can walk uphill for a few hours, this is well within reach.

What to expect

The highest point is 4,250 m, so altitude counts here. The itinerary is built around acclimatising and your guide sets a pace that gets you there comfortably.

You’re ready ifyou walk or hike now and then and can manage a few hours uphill with a day pack.
Give yourself a little longer ifit has been a while since a long walk. A few hill walks beforehand and you will enjoy it far more.
This might not be your trip ifyou would rather not sleep in a tent, or you want a glacier crossing or a high pass. Tell us and we will match you to the right one.

One thing we do insist on: travel insurance that covers helicopter evacuation.

Travel Plan

Itinerary — Deosai Bear Safari

Four days on the plateau: up over Sadpara to camp near Bara Pani, two days of dawn and dusk watching on the open ground, Sheosar Lake, and back to Skardu.
4 days

Morning drive up past Sadpara Lake (about 2,640 m) and onto the plateau rim at around 4,000 m, then across to camp near Bara Pani, about 3,900 m. Camp set up by mid-afternoon, first evening watch on the open ground.

Out before sunrise for the first watch, back for breakfast and a quiet midday in camp, then out again for the last two hours of light. The plateau around the Bara Pani and Kala Pani streams is classic bear ground.

Dawn watch, then across the plateau to Sheosar Lake at about 4,250 m, one of the highest large lakes anywhere, with Nanga Parbat on a clear day. Evening watch on the way back and a last night on the plateau.

A final early watch, breakfast, then down off the plateau via Sadpara to Skardu by early afternoon. Onward to Astore instead on request.

Why Karakoram Venture

Because the people who take you up this mountain are from it. Our guides grew up in these valleys, and they are our own team — not a booking desk handing you to whoever is cheapest that week. Every one of them is certified by the Alpine Club of Pakistan, holds Wilderness First Aid, and has between five and twenty years on high-altitude ground.

Because the safety is real, and we will name it rather than imply it. A satellite phone travels in every camp, we hold established helicopter-rescue contacts for this region, and we tell you exactly which travel insurance to carry. Budget operators cut precisely these things, because you cannot see them on a web page.

Because the price is honest. Local infrastructure is why $650 per person covers the trip from Islamabad rather than a stripped-down base rate. Exactly what it includes — and the handful of things it does not — is set out above.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will we see a brown bear?

Maybe. Deosai holds around 78 Himalayan brown bears (2022 count) across a huge plateau, and they are shy. Camping on the plateau and watching at dawn and dusk gives you a real chance, far better than a day trip, but no honest operator can guarantee a sighting.

How close do we get?

Not close. We watch from a distance with binoculars, stay on existing tracks, never feed or approach a bear, and keep quiet. Those are the park rules and they are why the population has recovered.

How high and how cold is it?

The plateau averages about 4,114 m, Bara Pani sits around 3,900 m and Sheosar Lake around 4,250 m. Even in July, nights drop close to freezing. We bring proper tents, sleeping mats and a cook, because at 4,000 m a casual camp is not the place to cut corners.

What else lives on Deosai?

Himalayan ibex, golden marmots almost everywhere, red foxes, wolves on rare occasions, and more than 120 bird species. July adds the wildflower carpet the plateau is famous for.

How is this different from your other Deosai trips?

The Skardu Deosai Meadow Safari is a shorter, easier visit, and the Deosai Jeep Safari crosses the whole plateau to Astore. This one stays put on the plateau for the wildlife hours. If bears are the point, this is the trip.

Why only July and August?

Deosai is snowbound from roughly November to May, and the road and camps are only reliable in high summer. July and August are also when bears are most active on the open ground.
