Masherbrum was the first peak the Karakoram surveyors ever numbered — K1 — and from Hushe it is obvious why: a 7,821m pyramid of ice filling the head of the valley, higher on the skyline than anything else you will see all week. The mountain itself is one of the hardest unclimbed-in-decades prizes in alpinism. Its base camp, though, is a walker's trek: two days up from Hushe village through willow thickets and summer pastures to the moraine at about 4,400m, with the northeast face a wall of ice above your tent.
This nine-day trip is the honest short trek of the Hushe corridor. The walking is moderate — four to five days on your feet, no glacier travel, no ropes — and the country is some of the finest in Baltistan: Khaplu's palace on the drive in, the last village at the end of the road, and porters who are your guides' neighbours. The highest point is 4,400 m, so altitude counts here. The itinerary is built around acclimatising and your guide sets a pace that gets you there comfortably.

Itinerary — Masherbrum Base Camp Trek
Nine days: the flight to Skardu, the Shyok road to Hushe with a palace stop in Khaplu, two walking days to base camp at about 4,400m, a full day under the face, and the walk and drive back out.

The walk-in begins through willow thickets and summer pastures up the Masherbrum valley, with the pyramid growing ahead of you all day. Camp in the meadows.

When does it run?
June to September. The pastures are greenest in July, the air sharpest in September, and the Hushe road is straightforward all season.
