Pakistan travel: safety & visa Trekking Tips And Guides

A Pakistan visa for US citizens is an online e-visa, and you can get it in about two weeks. You apply at the government portal, pay around $60, and usually receive approval within seven to ten working days. There is no consulate visit. However, do not count on a visa on arrival. Below is the exact process we walk every American client through. First the steps, then the Letter of Invitation, and finally what changes if your trip enters the Baltoro.

The Pakistan visa for US citizens, step by step

  1. Create an account at visa.nadra.gov.pk, the only official portal. Third-party sites charge a service fee for the same form, so ignore them.
  2. Choose the Tourist category for Hunza, Skardu, Fairy Meadows or Deosai. However, if your route enters the Baltoro or crosses the Gondogoro La, choose the Trekking and Mountaineering category instead. Our permits and NOC guide explains that line.
  3. Upload your documents. You need a clear passport scan with six months’ validity beyond your return, a recent passport photo, your flight booking, and a hotel booking or our Letter of Invitation. Sometimes the portal also asks for a bank statement.
  4. Pay the fee online by card. For US passports it is around $60. The portal shows the exact figure, and the money goes to the government, not to us.
  5. Wait for the approval email. Seven to ten working days is typical. Some applications clear in days, but some take longer. Therefore, apply at least four weeks before you fly, and hold off on non-refundable flights until approval.
  6. Print the approval and carry it with your passport. Immigration at Islamabad stamps you in against it. After that, you continue to Skardu by air or road; our getting to Skardu guide covers both.

The Letter of Invitation

Most applications include a Letter of Invitation from a registered Pakistani tour operator. It confirms your dates and your route. It also names who is responsible for you on the ground, which is what gives the visa officer confidence. Karakoram Venture issues the letter within two business days of your deposit, at no charge, on every package. So send us your passport scan at booking, and we draft it the same week.

Pakistan visa on arrival for US citizens: do not plan on it

Pakistan has run visa-on-arrival schemes for some nationalities in the past, and the lists change often. In January 2026, the government suspended the facility for most travellers. As a result, the e-visa is the dependable route, and it is the one we recommend to every American client. Arriving without an approved e-visa is a risk that no trek is worth.

What is different for Americans in practice

  • Register with STEP, the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, before you fly. It costs nothing, and the embassy uses it to reach you.
  • Read the advisory region by region. Country-level advisories describe border districts far from the tourist corridor. Our honest guide to whether Pakistan is safe maps the country the way a local operator sees it. It also says where we do not take clients.
  • Carry cash. Cards work in Islamabad and in the larger Skardu hotels. The valleys, however, run on rupees, and there are no ATMs on a trek.
  • Buy insurance with helicopter cover. Every high-altitude trip requires it, because ordinary US policies exclude trekking above roughly 4,500 metres. The insurance guide explains what to buy.

If your trip goes into the Baltoro

The Baltoro corridor is a restricted zone. In practice, that means the Trekking and Mountaineering visa category, a trekking permit, and a No Objection Certificate on top of the visa. We arrange the permit and the NOC for every trekker on the K2 Base Camp Trek, and the standard fees sit inside the price. The one thing we cannot do is compress the timing. For that reason, we ask for passport details ten to twelve weeks before departure.

Frequently asked questions

Can US citizens get a visa on arrival in Pakistan?

Do not plan on it. The government suspended visa-on-arrival schemes for most nationalities in January 2026. Instead, the online e-visa is the dependable Pakistan visa for US citizens.

How much is the Pakistan visa fee for US citizens?

Around $60 for a tourist e-visa on a US passport. Fees depend on nationality, and you pay them on the government portal, so check the figure shown there when you apply.

How long does a Pakistan visa for US citizens take?

Usually seven to ten working days after you submit the online application. Therefore, apply at least four weeks before you fly, and wait for approval before buying non-refundable flights.

Can Americans go to Pakistan right now?

Yes. Thousands of foreign trekkers walk the Karakoram every summer, and Americans are among them. Register with STEP, read the advisory by region, and book with a licensed operator. In short, treat the mountains, not the politics, as the real risk.

Do I need a different visa for the K2 Base Camp trek?

Yes. The Baltoro is a restricted zone, so you apply in the Trekking and Mountaineering category. Your operator then arranges a trekking permit and a No Objection Certificate. We do that for every K2 client, and the price includes the standard fees.
