Skardu Weather and the Best Time to Visit, Month by Month (2027)

Skardu & Baltistan Trekking Tips And Guides

Skardu weather is dry, sunny and sharply seasonal, and the month you choose decides what is open. The town sits at about 2,500 metres in the upper Indus valley, so summer days reach the high twenties while winter nights drop well below freezing. However, the real question is not temperature but access: the Deosai road opens in June and closes around October, the treks run June to September, the blossom comes in April, and the flight from Islamabad can be cancelled in any month. Therefore, this guide goes month by month, and then by the kind of trip you want.

Skardu weather month by month

January and FebruaryCold and clear. Days hover around freezing, nights fall to minus ten or lower, and snow lies on the passes. The town, the forts and the Sarfaranga dunes stay open; Deosai, Khaplu’s upper valleys and every trek are closed. Flights are at their most erratic.
MarchThawing. Days climb into the low teens and the orchards begin to stir. Roads reopen valley by valley, and the first apricot blossom appears at the end of the month.
AprilBlossom. Mild days, cool nights, pink and white orchards along the Indus and in Shigar. The Kachura lakes and Satpara are at their quietest and prettiest; the high passes are still under snow.
MaySpring proper. Warm days, green terraces, the Khaplu road open again. Deosai is usually still closed; the Baltoro season has not started.
JuneThe season opens. Deosai’s road is cleared and the plateau turns green; the first trekking groups walk in towards Askole; days are warm and dry.
July and AugustHigh summer. Days around 28 to 30 degrees, nights near 14, almost no rain. Every trek, pass and jeep track is open, Deosai is in flower, and the valley is at its busiest. Afternoon cloud can delay the flight.
SeptemberThe best all-round month. Settled weather, cooler nights, clear skies, Deosai still open, the Baltoro emptying out. Book early.
OctoberGold. Poplars and apricot trees turn, days are crisp and nights cold. Deosai closes with the first snow around the middle of the month; the lower valleys and the lakes are at their most photogenic.
November and DecemberWinter arrives. Short, bright days, hard frosts, the first town snow. Culture and lake trips still run; treks do not.

Best time to visit Skardu: the weather for each kind of trip

  • Treks and expeditions: June to September. The Baltoro approach to K2, the Thalle La, Skoro La and Chogo Lungma all sit inside that window, with July to mid-September the safest for the passes.
  • Deosai: mid-June to the end of September. The Deosai guide explains when the road opens and when the bears are easiest to see.
  • Blossom: April, usually a week or so behind Hunza. The Skardu Cherry Blossom Tour is timed for it.
  • Autumn colours: mid-October to early November, the season the Skardu Autumn Tour is built around.
  • Culture, lakes and the desert: almost all year. Kharpocho Fort, the Manthal Buddha and Satpara, the Kachura lakes and the Sarfaranga cold desert need no season, only a jacket.

Skardu weather, the airport and the flight

The one-hour flight from Islamabad is the fastest way in, and it is also the thing Skardu weather affects most. The aircraft needs clear visibility past Nanga Parbat, so cancellations happen in every month, most often in winter storms and on cloudy summer afternoons. In practice, we build buffer days around the flight and keep the two-day road up the Karakoram Highway as the fallback. The night before you fly, check the Pakistan Meteorological Department forecast for Skardu. The getting to Skardu guide compares both, hour by hour.

What to pack for Skardu weather

Layers, whatever the month. Summer days are warm but the nights are cold at altitude, and on Deosai or above Satpara the wind bites even in August. Our gear list for Pakistan is written for exactly this range, and the Skardu and Baltistan guide covers everything else before you fly.

Frequently asked questions

What is the weather like in Skardu in October?

Crisp and golden. Days are mild, nights are cold, the poplars and orchards turn, and Deosai closes with the first snow around the middle of the month. It is the best month for photographs and the Skardu Autumn Tour.

Does it snow in Skardu?

Yes. Snow lies on the passes from October to May and reaches the town itself in December and January, when nights fall to minus ten or lower. The town, the forts and the cold desert stay open; the treks and Deosai do not.

When does the Deosai road open?

Usually in June, once crews clear the snow, and it stays passable until around October. Mid-June to the end of September is the dependable window.

What is the best month to visit Skardu?

September for settled weather, open treks and Deosai with fewer people; July and August for the full summer season; April for blossom; mid-October for autumn colour. Culture and lake trips work almost all year.

How cold is Skardu in June?

Pleasant. June days are warm and dry in town, but nights stay cool, and up on Deosai or at Satpara the wind can be cold even at midday, so bring layers.

Is Skardu weather a problem for flights?

It can be in any month. The flight needs clear visibility past Nanga Parbat, so cancellations cluster in winter storms and on cloudy summer afternoons. Build a buffer day into your plan and keep the road as the fallback.
