Islamabad to Fairy Meadows: Route, the Jeep Track and What It Costs (2027)

Jeeps on the Raikot cliff track to Fairy Meadows, Nanga Parbat
Nanga Parbat & Fairy Meadows Trekking Tips And Guides

Islamabad to Fairy Meadows is three stages, not one journey: a full day on the Karakoram Highway, a short jeep track that locals drive for a living, and a walk uphill through pine forest. Nobody drives the whole way. Therefore the question is not how many hours it takes but how you break it, and which of the three stages you are willing to shorten. This guide lays out the route exactly as we run it, with the altitudes from our own itineraries and an honest word about the jeep.

Stage one: the Karakoram Highway to Chilas

The first day is the long one. You leave Islamabad at 540 metres and follow the Karakoram Highway north along the Indus to Chilas at 1,265 metres, where every one of our Fairy Meadows trips spends the night. However, we do not try to reach the meadow the same day, because the jeep track and the walk both need daylight and fresh legs. On the way home we sometimes route through Besham instead, which breaks the drive differently.

Stage two: the Raikot Bridge jeep track

From Chilas it is a short run to Raikot Bridge, where the tarmac ends and the famous bit begins. The track climbs 15 kilometres to Tato village, cut into a cliff, wide enough for one jeep. In 2013 the World Health Organization called it the second-deadliest road on the planet. Only local drivers work it, and that is deliberate on our side too: we never let a client drive it, and we use the same drivers season after season. It is genuinely exposed, and it is also genuinely routine for the men who do it daily.

Stage three: the walk up to the meadow

At Tato the jeeps stop and you walk. The path is clear, it climbs steadily through pine forest, and it takes most people three to four hours over about five kilometres. Porters or a mule can carry your bag. Then the trees open and you are standing on Fairy Meadows at 3,300 metres, with the Raikot face of Nanga Parbat straight ahead. The full Fairy Meadows guide covers what to do once you are up there, and the Nanga Parbat Base Camp trek guide covers the walk beyond it.

What the Islamabad to Fairy Meadows trip costs

Our four-day Fairy Meadows Trek Express runs from $600 per person, and the six-day Fairy Meadows Trek from $750. The nine-day Fairy Meadows and Nanga Parbat Base Camp trek from $975 adds an acclimatisation day and goes on to the 4,000 metre base camp. All three include the transport, the jeeps, the rooms, the meals and a guide from our own team. Flights to Pakistan and your visa are not included.

How many days Islamabad to Fairy Meadows needs

Four days is the honest minimum: drive, walk up, look, come down, drive. Six is better, because one spare day at the meadow buys you the viewpoint at 3,900 metres and a second chance if cloud hides the mountain. Nine days gets you to base camp. Below four days the arithmetic simply does not work, whatever a cheap listing claims.

What to bring

Layers, boots with grip, and a warm jacket even in July, because the meadow sits at 3,300 metres and the nights are cold. Our Karakoram gear list covers the rest, and the Nanga Parbat and Fairy Meadows guide is the place to start if you are still choosing a route.
